Local artists and Lottery funds revitalize the Slabs with vibrant murals

Thanks to the incredible support from our players, the Elizabeth Street Parkway Outdoor Basketball Courts, also known as “the Slabs”, in Pueblo is undergoing a vibrant transformation. In partnership with Pueblo Parks and Recreation, the Colorado Lottery has funded a major renovation of the facilities including four unique murals created by local artists.

We could not be more thrilled to see our Lottery dollars at work on such an important project right in our backyard! The new and improved courts will be a place the community gathers for years to come, while celebrating the amazing local artists in Pueblo.

Each design by the artists is unique to their own style and depicts the love of Pueblo, of basketball or a mix of both themes. The selected artists and their designs include:

  • Tia Monson: A Pueblo muralist with over 20 murals along the Arkansas River Levee. Her design features the Colorado Lottery logo as a basketball and bold “PUEBLO” lettering.
  • Anthony Marinucci: Combining his passion for art and financial management, Marinucci’s mural integrates the Colorado Lottery logo, Pueblo sun, Rocky Mountains, and the steel mill outline.
  • Jazelle Bustos: Dedicated to community and cultural celebration, Bustos’ mural depicts a hand reaching for a basketball with dynamic, splattered colors.
  • Chloe Kelly: Known for her vibrant and abstract works, Kelly’s mural features graffiti-style “PUEBLO SLABS” lettering and a lively depiction of a basketball player.

The Slabs renovation includes a new post-tension concrete slab, upgraded posts, backboards, hoops, benches, and LED lighting, with an estimated total cost of $500,000. The project, which began on June 24, is set for completion by the end of September. (Keep an eye out for the grand re-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony!)

Every Lottery ticket you purchase helps fund projects like this, enhancing our community spaces. Thanks to our players, the Slabs will continue to be a cherished place for play and community gathering. Keep playing, Colorado, and keep making a difference!
