What’s the best way to share a prize?
If you want to share a cash prize with others, you can choose to “split” the prize by having all prize winners complete IRS Tax Form 5754 that will dictate how to split certain gambling winnings. If you decide to “split” the prize, one person is designated as the prize recipient, signs the winning Scratch ticket, and distributes the money. You’ll need to provide the names, addresses, social security numbers, and the gross amount to be distributed to each person. Another way to share your winnings is to consider building a trust fund after you have claimed your prize. Your bank, attorney or certified financial advisor can give you advice about this option.
Come prepared.
Complete the Colorado Lottery Prize Claim Form. Bring a photo I.D. and your Social Security number, if you have one. Acceptable identification includes: driver’s license, passport, military I.D. card, green card – or any form of government-issued identification with photo.
Before claiming a large prize, it’s always a good idea to seek financial advice.
